The Volunteer Transportation Center is looking for Volunteers–just like you!
Volunteers provide a vital connection to individuals in their community by giving rides to medical, social services, or other daily needs appointments. If you have access to a reliable vehicle, enjoy driving and meeting people, become a volunteer! Volunteers are offered reimbursement at the standard IRS mileage rate for each trip (currently at $.58 per mile). It’s a great way to feel good and help your neighbor at the same time.
When you become a volunteer through Volunteer Transportation Center programs, you provide cost effective transportation to neighbors in your own community in need of a ride. Many of those in need of transportation are older adults, individuals with disabilities, and Medicaid clients.
How It Works
As a volunteer, you decide how often you can offer transportation. Most trips are centered on medical needs, providing access to appointments like dialysis, radiation treatment, physical therapy and more. You may also provide access to other appointments, affordable food locations, counseling, prevention treatment, or various human services programs.
While most appointments are local, others can be further away—Syracuse, Burlington, Buffalo and beyond. You can determine the range of transportation service you are able to provide.
Our volunteers use their own vehicles to transport neighbors in Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence Counties to critical medical, dental, mental health and other life sustaining services. Volunteers are reimbursed up to $0.56 per mile to cover the cost of fuel and vehicle repairs. The ideal volunteer must:
- be willing to give a minimum of 4 hours per week–you pick the days and times, VTC provides services 24/7, 365 days a per year
- have a clean driving record
- pass a thorough background check
- and have a love of giving back to the community
